This morning, Parish President Mitch Orgeron joined our Animal Shelter Team, along with community and project partners, for a ribbon cutting ceremony for our new Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter!
The previous animal shelter was heavily damaged during Hurricane Ida, and design work for the new shelter began in 2022. The newly constructed shelter was funded by Hurricane Ida bond money totaling $1.9 million and is a little over 2,600 sqft. With the new shelter, our dedicated staff can continue the incredible work that helped to achieve a “no-kill” status in 2022-2024, maintaining a 90% live release rate. We remain focused on community-based solutions such as adoption and foster programs, spay and neuter partnerships, accessible veterinary care, and pet food support. The new shelter was built using resilient building materials for longevity of the structure under such heavy use and as an additional line of defense for future hurricane or storm related events.Thank you to all who contributed to this important project, including animal welfare professionals, our architect DDG, Castagnos Goodwin Utley Engineers, Badeaux Engineers, and contractor Onshore Construction. Special thanks to our partners at the ASPCA for the fencing and Petco Love for the furniture.
