Coastal Zone Management

what do we do?

Lafourche Parish is home to beautiful and important coastal ecosystems that are vital to our way of life. The Coastal Zone Management Department is dedicated to protecting and enhancing these natural coastal areas. Our coastlines are not only scenic but also serve as natural storm barriers, help control floods, and provide habitats for a wide variety of wildlife. We understand the value of our coast for its natural beauty, its role in our economy, and its cultural significance.

Our mission is to restore, improve, and protect the coastal zone so it remains a strong defense against storms and erosion. We work hard to protect habitats for wildlife and keep the coast as a valuable resource for the parish, the state, and the nation. By doing this, we make sure that future generations can enjoy and benefit from a healthy coastal environment.

Supporting Coastal Businesses

Value of Coastal-Dependent Activities: We recognize the importance of businesses that rely on the coast, such as fishing, tourism, and shipping. These industries help our economy grow and provide jobs for our residents.

Coordinated Development: We encourage coordinated development within the coastal zone. This means planning carefully so businesses can succeed while we protect the environment.

Encouraging Recreation & Public Access

Recreational Use: We encourage people to enjoy activities like fishing, boating, and visiting the beach. We respect private property and monitor public access so everyone can safely enjoy the coast and the waterways throughout Lafourche.

We strive to balance the protection of our natural ecosystems with the support of commercial activities. By doing this, we allow current and future residents to enjoy the many benefits of a healthy coastal zone. We are committed to fostering the public safety, health, and welfare of all Lafourche Parish residents.
