A Message from the Director

Welcome to Lafourche Parish Head Start! Our program earned a Certificate of Excellence in March, 2007, for being in full compliance with all applicable Head Start Program Performance Standards, laws, regulations, and policy requirements.

Early childhood teachers “show the ropes” of school to young children. It is here that children learn the most critical values related to school success—respect and responsibility. These first teachers accept the children in their care unconditionally and set up a safe learning environment that supports choice. They model curiosity and otherwise structure group and individual activities so children will grow to feel proud and competent. Thus, the young children gain the courage to dare—to tackle the difficult—to learn and to succeed with the tools demanded by our society.

As these young children enter Lafourche Parish Head Start they will experience developmentally appropriate activities that will help them learn to balance independence and cooperation. They will learn the value of work and approaches to conflict resolution. These young children will learn to establish friendships with peers. Our teachers will model dignity and respect as they establish and maintain a secure climate for learning. Children respond in such settings by developing habits through their exchanges with teachers and classmates. These habits are dispositions, skills and attitudes that result in the formation of character.

Through active intervention, young children and their families will move toward privilege and accomplishment. Children who receive quality early childhood education arrive at school ready to learn, do better in school, need fewer special education classes, and are more likely to graduate from high school and to hold jobs.

I wish success for all of our families.

Sincerely,

Martha Babin
Lafourche Parish Head Start Director

A Commitment to Excellence

Lafourche Parish Head Start Certificate of Excellence

PRESS RELEASE: May 2, 2007
Lafourche Parish’s Head Start Program was recently presented with a Certificate of Excellence after an intensive on-site monitoring. “The Head Start Program has about 1,700 regulations and polices that we have to follow,” said Head Start Director Martha Babin, “and I am extremely proud to say that we are in compliance with every one of them.”

From February 25-March 2, 2007, the Administration for Children and Families conducted an on-site monitoring review of Lafourche Parish Council Head Start. Based on the information gathered during the review it was established that this Head Start program had no areas of noncompliance and was therefore recognized as in full compliance with all applicable Head Start Program Performance Standards, laws, regulations, and policy requirements. A Certificate of Excellence was presented to the program from Dr. Wade Horn, Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Mr. Channell Wilkins, Director of the Office of Head Start.

Head Start is a federal preschool program designed to give children ages 3 and 4 from low-income families, activities that help them grow mentally, socially, emotionally, and physically. Children turning 4 years old at any time during the year are eligible for our program during the current year. Parents may submit an application for their 2 year old child at any time to be put on a waiting list so that when they are nearing their 3 year old birthday they could be selected for enrollment for the current year. Children with disabilities are accepted. Bus transportation and all supplies are provided. Our children score at or above the national average for preschoolers on the National Rating System.
