Lafourche Parish President Charlotte Randolph and Parish Administrator Archie Chaisson will be joining other coastal parish representatives in Washington, DC to bring attention to the devastating effects that the FEMA flood maps will cause in our community. They arrive in the nation’s capital on Tuesday May 7th. The Biggert-Waters Act of 2012 will require that those who participate in the flood insurance program increase their annual payment by 75% over the next three years, also excluding existing grandfathered property and base premiums on the soon to be released FEMA flood maps. President Randolph and Administrator Chaisson will also demand that the Lafourche Parish levee system be recognized by FEMA. Presently FEMA does not recognize the levee system, which under the new mapping system causes the entire parish to be in a flood zone. Lafourche Parish President Randolph stated, “The economic impact on our community because of the new mapping system is devastating. Our levees have protected our community through hurricane after hurricane, for FEMA to threaten to do this is unacceptable.” "Louisiana coastal communities have for generations survived hurricanes and flooding because of hurricanes.
