Mathews, LA – By a 7-0 vote with two members absent, the Lafourche Parish Council on Tuesday night approved an ordinance that streamlines the organization and administration of parish recreation districts. The new ordinance abolishes the seven standing recreation boards and replaces them with a nine member parish wide recreation advisory board which will report to the parish council. This nine member board, with one appointment per council district, will work with the parish recreation manager, Council and administration on developing, planning and implementing recreation programs as well as participate in the development of the recreation operating budget.

In addition, four local advisory boards of five members each, for the four local recreation taxing districts that will remain in place, will be established to advise the larger parish board. Plus, monies generated by the four local taxing districts will also stay within the local districts.

“The reorganization of recreation districts will prove to be a winner for all of the parish because, once completed, it will lead to cost savings for the taxpayers and more recreation opportunity for our children and grandchildren,” said Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle.

“This reorganization will allow our recreation program to be in line with other surrounding parishes

and will provide for streamlining and growth,” said Council Chairman Jerry Lafont.
