PARISH OFFICIALS URGE CITIZENS TO SIGN UP FOR “CODE RED”
                                              EMERGENCY NOTIFICATIONS

Mathews, LA – As hurricane season begins, Lafourche Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle and Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre announced a new emergency alert service immediately available to all residents.  The system is called CodeRED and allows citizens to sign up online to receive location based notifications by phone call or text message in case of an emergency.

While details on emergencies such as evacuations, hazardous spills and boil water advisories are always announced through press releases and social media, Lafourche Parish Government and the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office now use an automated telephone system which makes phone calls to residents in a specific area in the event of such an emergency.  The new CodeRED system will also call or send text messages to cell phones of citizens who sign up online.  The system will allow for several thousand phone calls to be made simultaneously, reducing the total time needed to contact each citizen.

When signing up for CodeRED online, each citizen will complete a form requesting basic information.  Multiple phone numbers can be added, including land based and cell telephone lines.  An email address can also be added to receive alerts that way.  Users will have an opportunity to verify all information, including the ability to pinpoint their location on a map and conduct a test call of numbers entered.

“As technology evolves, more and more people are on mobile devices. This will now allow citizens to keep up with breaking events as they go about their daily business,” Cantrelle said.
Sheriff Craig Webre noted that “after considering options, we decided to use CodeRED as it allows us to continue providing the same service with enhanced options and capabilities.”

Residents can register by going to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office website (lpso.net) or the Lafourche Parish Government website (lafouchegov.org) and clicking on the COdeRED link on the homepage.  To enroll by phone, please call Emergency Preparedness at 985-532-8174.
