In an effort to find homes for a large influx of dogs, the Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter in Thibodaux is offering $30 dog adoptions through Friday, Aug. 14.

This price includes spay/neuter, microchip and age-appropriate vaccines.

According to shelter manager Hilary Knight, a recent case involving a home owner from Galliano caused the shelter to increase its dog population by 29 alone.

This home owner surrendered his animals last week after suffering a stroke that left him unable to care for them.

While the Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter tries its best to place animals like these, the job becomes extremely difficult when you only have 13 dog kennels, according to shelter manager Hilary Knight.

Knight said this is the peak of the summer breeding season and everyone, including shelters and rescue groups are struggling to keep up with the influx of animals, both of the feline and dog variety. The cat adoption fee is $50.

Along with lower adoption prices this week, Knight encourages residents to take advantage of the spaying and neutering program the shelter offers.

Knight cites the situation involving the Galliano home owner as all the proof needed to understand just how important spaying and neutering is. Knight said the surrendered animals probably began as one or two dogs that grew to number 29.

“By fixing your own dog or cat or a dog or cat in your community, you are saving countless lives,” Knight said.

The voucher prices for spaying and neutering services offered at the shelter are as follows:

Female 0-25 pounds: $63

Male 0-25 pounds: $53

Female heavier than 25 pounds: $85

Male heavier than 25 pounds: $65

Female: $40

Male: $3
